Networkmaine is a newly established unit within the University of Maine System created by the restructuring of its communications and network services group. It was created in 2009 to provide the public entities served with greater involvement in shaping the future of Maine’s research and education network, MaineREN.
Created by a memorandum of understanding, Networkmaine operates through a coordinating council which is comprised of the University of Maine System, the Maine State Department of Education, the Maine State Library, and the Maine State Government Office of Information Technology.
The primary focus of Networkmaine is the design and operation of MaineREN and services developed to support education, research, public service, government, and economic development.
The next Networkmaine council meeting will be held Thursday, June 3rd at 2:00 PM in the Burton Cross Building Rm. 541 in Augusta. These meetings are open to the public.
Approximately 100 schools with high-capacity connectivity will be receiving a Joebox security and routing appliance as part of FY2010 installs.
As part of the K20 initiative, Networkmaine provides schools and libraries thoughout the state with Internet services though the Maine School and Library Network.
